Sunday School

Idlewild Baptist Church offers Sunday School from 9:45AM to 10:45AM each Sunday with a variety of classes for both adults and children. Current classes are listed below.

College & Career
If you are interested in being part of a group that is all inclusive, please join us to see if we are the right fit for meeting your needs. We jump start our activities with a Bible Study hour which meets Sundays from 9:45 - 10:45 am. Our typical age is 18 - 30 and our group is focused on studying the topics/situations in life that you face daily. We have discussions on these topics and you are encouraged to share your thoughts and your struggles. We seek to help you in your spiritual growth and challenges as you grow in your faith.
Newly Married
The Newly Married class consists of couples who've been married within the past five years. We meet in the classroom outside of the choir room. We will begin a new study of the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan on Sunday, February 27. Through this study, we will focus on what the Bible teaches us about love, learning how to truly love God, and what happens to us and through us when we do.

Our Sunday School class is called the Lifemates, and we are probably one of the newer classes at IBC. This is a class made up primarily of married couples ranging in age from mid- 20’s to early 40’s. Most of our couples have young children, and, in fact, two of our couples are presently expecting. The Lifemates enjoy serving in many different areas of our church, including Children’s Sunday School, Children’s Church, working in our nursery, and participating in our music ministry. As a result, it’s sometimes difficult to have everyone meet together during the Sunday School hour, so we emphasize the need to get together outside of class as well. The class is led by Randy & Kris Kegarise and Walt Fields.

Presently we are studying God’s word together through a Lifeway study called Life Matters. Each week Life Matters offers us the opportunity to explore a specific question regarding our faith in Christ. So far we have looked at key topics such as “Where is God when I’m Suffering?’ and “How is God Involved in My Daily Life?”.  In addition, the men of the class have recently begun sharing discussions about our lessons, prayer requests, and other issues via a private internet forum administered by our class deacon, Caleb Komis. We’re excited by the introduction of this forum as a way to continue discussing our week’s topic well after we have been dismissed on Sunday morning.

If you’re looking to be part of a great group of young folks who love God, His word, and who love people, please join us Sunday mornings. We’d love to meet you!

God's Olive

We would like to welcome you to God’s Olive. We are a group of believers of diverse ages and backgrounds united by our desire to mature in our individual relationships with God and draw closer to one another as His family. We have couples, singles, married members with spouses who are not attending, attend worship elsewhere, work on Sunday, or teach in other classes. Together we seek to live by a Christ-centered world view where salvation is a gift from God through Jesus our Lord, and this gift inspires us to live our lives in a way that demonstrates we are His children in response to His Love. In fact, this is where we found our name – rearranging the letters will give you “God is Love.”

We use God’s word – the Bible – to map our journey in this Christ-centered worldview. What love God has shown to provide us a book that reveals His standards and that gives examples of men and women who met with his approval! We are not left on our own to happen upon these as we proceed through life. Second Timothy 3:16 -17 informs us of this and goes on to provide its intended purpose, “…so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Our class is a discussion based study where through examining and answering questions we seek to apply God’s word to our lives so through them He can transform our lives. The fellowship of God’s Olive prays, shares, encourages, cries, and rejoices with one another. We participate in the Aaron-Hur ministry, the women and children’s shelter meal ministry, and encourage classmates to be actively involved within the whole body at Idlewild. As a class, we also enjoy several class and family get-togethers throughout each year. Led by Erik Burkheimer, we are currently studying the book of 1st Thessalonians.

Couples II

Couples II Sunday School Class is a variety of married people from many different avenues of life. Some of our members have preschool children while others have children that are grown.

We follow the Explore The Bible series by Lifeway and study a new book of the Bible about once a month. Our class is led by Jimmy Godwin and Keith Morhard.

Come be a part of our class and enjoy the fellowship and discussion as we try to dig further into God’s word.

Couples III

Couples III Sunday School Class is an intermingling of mid-age believers (married couples and singles) who have a hunger and thirst for studying God's Word, a heart for service, and a penchant for fun-loving antics and fellowship.

We have a focused activity each month that includes service projects and fellowships.
Our activity for this month is: Donations for Bookbags of Love - ( by February 13)

We use the SBC Life Values Curriculum for our Bible Study.

Couples IV

Couples IV class consists of couples from around age 55 until they reach heaven. However, we have several men in our class without their wives, due to health reasons or other church responsibilities. We have 4 teachers with very different teaching styles that rotate every month: Sylvia Barkley, Hank Rivers, Ron Sossaman, and Bob Shipferling.

We use Explore the Bible for our Sunday School literature. It alternates each quarter between the Old and New Testament. Currently we are studying 2 Kings. March through May, we will study Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. June through August will be Joshua, Judges, and Ruth.

In the fall, we have a Sunday School retreat to Ocean Isle. It's a fantastic time of fellowship and getting to know one another. Throughout the year, we usually have a bar-b-que, Christmas social, and another outing. We may be the "more mature" class, but we have fun and still learn more about God's word.

Come join us!! We meet in the choir room. We look forward to seeing you!!

Ladies Class - Faith

The Faith Sunday school class is a group of unique and wonderful ladies of varying ages. Our members include women who are married, single, divorced or widowed. We have four dedicated teachers who teach us God’s word on a rotating basis. We are presently studying 2 Kings. Praying and reaching out to others with compassion are very important to us as we seek to glorify God. We would be delighted to have you join us!

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me and I in them will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
